“THE MOURNING AFTER” & the baby fawn, Stella
In my song the “Mourning After”, you may hear references to “A doe on the side of the road”
That is references a specific experience when I was just 3 years old.
My mother and I rescued a baby fawn with the help of friends and mentors, Anne and Scott
The fawn and I developed a strong affection for each other right away.
This connection continued over the years.
Scott is a bearded outdoorsman who lived in a cabin on the Edisto River,
and ran a canoe and tree house adventure company.
Scott owned a property in the vast, protected wetlands of the ACE Basin, in SC.
His property, was known as the Edisto River Refuge.
Anne, is the founder of the largest outdoor company in the Lowcountry of SC,
called Coastal Expeditions.
Scott raised Stella at his cabin and tied a red scarf around her neck,
so local hunters would know she had been domesticated.
The relationship with Stella the doe, had a profound effect on me.
I would go out to see her when I was able to make the hour trip from Charleston.
Stella disappeared one day, and no one knows exactly what happened to her.
The spirit of the doe and the mystery of what happened still haunts me.
It is a continuous part of my story.
Stella’s spirit often influences some of my creativity.
