Some of the most important parts of a music community happen on the smallest stages.
Jams Island, an open mic on James Island, is a great example. Hosted by musician Ev Hynes, the gathering gives local musicians a place to get onstage, try something new, meet other artists, and simply play. Recent Jams Island events have been held at Smoke N Brew on James Island.
What makes an open mic like Jams Island special isn't necessarily who's headlining—it's who might walk through the door.
You might hear an experienced musician testing a new song, someone performing in public for the first time, or musicians who have never played together suddenly collaborating.
That's how a local music scene grows.
Open mics provide a low-pressure entry point for new performers while giving established musicians a place to experiment and connect. Friendships are made, bands can form, and musicians discover people they may eventually share stages and projects with.
Charleston has plenty of established venues and festivals, but gatherings like Jams Island are part of the foundation underneath all of that.
They give people a place to start.
Bring an instrument. Bring a song. Meet some people. Listen to somebody new.
Sometimes that's all it takes to build a music community.
