A story from The Adventures of the Nereids
Inspired by the song “Battleships”
“But how?” Theron asked, his voice breaking. “I am a man of war. It is all I have ever known.”
Galene smiled, her eyes reflecting the boundless patience of the ocean. “The sea does not only rage, Theron. It also nurtures. It provides. Let me show you.”

Over the days that followed, Galene guided him with the same gentleness that had carried him through the storm. She taught him how to fish with respect, taking only what he needed. She showed him how to read the patterns of the wind and waves, to understand the sea as a living entity rather than a force to be conquered.
At night, they sat by a fire, and Galene shared stories of the ocean’s endless wisdom. She spoke of sailors who had learned to live in balance with the world, building communities instead of destroying them. She spoke of the interconnectedness of all things—the tides that shaped the shores, the rivers that fed the sea, and the stars that guided lost souls home.
Theron listened, his heart softening with each tale. He began to see the world through new eyes—not as a battlefield, but as a delicate web of life and possibility.
One evening, as they walked along the shore, Galene stopped and gazed out at the horizon. “Your time here is nearly over,” she said. “The sea calls to you again, but not for war. You must return to the world of men and bring with you what you have learned.”
