A story from The Adventures of the Nereids
Inspired by the song “Battleships”
Captain Theron awoke to the warmth of the morning sun and the gentle murmur of waves lapping at the shore. The island stretched out before him, wild and untouched, its green canopy alive with the songs of unfamiliar birds. For the first time in years, he felt a peace that neither gold nor glory had ever brought him.
He rose unsteadily, his body still aching from the battle and the storm. The memories of the previous night returned—the wrath of the sea, the sorrow of loss, and the radiant figure of Galene. Her song still lingered faintly in his mind, like the whisper of the tide.
Theron began exploring the island, gathering fruit and fresh water. Though his body moved with purpose, his heart felt heavy with questions. Why had Galene saved him? What was this second chance meant to teach him?
As if in answer, the sea stirred. He turned to find Galene rising from the water once more, her form shimmering like sunlight on the waves.
“Galene,” he breathed, bowing his head.
“You have made it ashore,” she said, her voice kind but firm. “Now the true journey begins.”
Theron looked at her, confusion clouding his features. “What do you mean? I have no ship, no crew, no home. I am a sailor with no course to chart.”
“Then it is time to chart a new course,” she said, stepping closer. “The gods did not spare you so you might dwell in despair. The life you led was one of bloodshed and greed. Now, you must learn to live in harmony—with the sea, with the land, and with yourself.”
