A story from The Adventures of the Nereids storybook
inspired by the song “Battleships”

Captain Theron clung to a piece of driftwood, the remains of his proud trireme now scattered among the waves. His men were gone, claimed by the storm or by the enemy. He was unsure if the sacrifice he made allowed one lifeboat to survive. All he knew was that now he was alone. His strength waned as the cold bit into his flesh. His vision blurred with salt and exhaustion. It seemed the sea had won.

As his grip faltered, a soft, ethereal light pierced the gloom. A figure emerged from the water, her form radiant and otherworldly. Her hair flowed like seaweed in the current, her eyes like pearls catching the faintest light.
"Who—what are you?" Theron gasped, his voice barely audible over the crashing waves.
"I am Galene," she said, her voice a melody that carried both the comfort of lapping waves and the power of the ocean’s depths. "A daughter of Nereus, guardian of calm seas. Do not fear, sailor, for I will guide you through this tempest."
